Jon

Born in Honolulu Hawaii on April 9th 1971, Jon was the second of four boys who grew up in the waters of Naval stations around the world.  His school years were spent in the Philippines, Spain and Japan.  After Jon graduated from high school in Japan, he immediately moved back to the place he always called home, Hawaii.

Jon developed an interest in photography while attending BYU Hawaii and working at the Polynesian Cultural Center where he met his wife, Nikki. He left Hawaii to gain experience with various labs and photographers on both the west and east coasts. However, after two years away he was very homesick for Hawaii and moved backto open his own photography studio in Honolulu, shooting commercial work, model portfolios and weddings.

Jon had a deep respect for the ocean and a passion to photograph the life and power it holds.  “The ocean is a part of me, our love affair goes way back.  I feel at home in the water.  With my work I aim to capture the natural raw beauty and power that only the ocean can possess.  I like to be up close and record most of my images with wide angle lenses where I can be in the wave and a part of it”. He was the first surf photographer to open his own gallery and sell ocean and wave images as Fine Art.

He spent a lot of time shooting in the waters of Oahu, but his favorite works were produced in Tahiti.  Jon’s first trip to Tahiti was in 1998 and he instantly fell in love with the Tahitian people,  culture, and their ocean.  He returned at least once a year to photograph, surf, and visit friends who had become family.  When he wasn’t working, Jon loved to surf and skate.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his wife and four children who were between 2-12 years old at the time of his death on February 9th 2005 at Pipeline, on the North Shore of Oahu.

First and foremost, in my life the most Important to me are children. Way above being an artist or a photographer or anything else, family and people are the most important thing in my life.  I would much rather be known as someone who loves people first, and then maybe be known as someone who captures the ocean second”.  -Jon Mozo
